Favorite Books from Childhood

In our October 1998 Circle Time Contest we asked our readers to tell us the book that they liked best as a child, and their current favorite book for children. Here are selected responses from Wendy Carr, Holly Price, Angela Jacobs, and Melanie Paholich.

The winner of our October 1998 Circle Time Contest is Wendy Carr:
Favorite Book as a Child: The book I cherish most from my childhood is Corduroy. It's a story about a toy bear who gets lost in a department store at night. As a small child I could easily relate to Corduroy... the world often seemed so easy to get lost in.
Current Favorite Book for Children: Where the Wild Things Are
(Wendy's contest entry was randomly selected from the entries that we chose for publication, and she has been awarded the prize: a $10 gift certificate for purchase of books, tapes, or CDs from Amazon.com. Check out our current contest!)

Holly Price wrote:
Favorite Book as a Child: My favorite picture book was Socks for Supper. I have no idea who the talented author was, but I recall the fascinating illustrations of this elderly couple unraveling their sweaters in order to knit socks... the socks got exchanged for supper, thus the title.
Current Favorite Book for Children: Bears in the Night

Angela Jacobs wrote:
Favorite Book as a Child: My favorite book was from grade school, a "textbook" of fairy tales. One of those favorites was Hansel & Gretel because I loved the look of the cottages and of course the happy ending. It truly inspired a love of reading by opening up a new world.
Current Favorite Book for Children: Charlotte's Web

Melanie Paholich wrote:
Favorite Book as a Child: The Little Mermaid was my favorite picture book because I loved the 3-D type illustrations. I was so sad when the Little Mermaid lost her voice and then turned into bubbles in the sea; I looked at the pictures over and over again, as if I could will the characters to change the ending.
